The SinPhoNIA experiment aims at developing single photon radiation detectors by using carbon nanotubes for signal detection and silicon substrate for amplification, readout and acquisition processes.

The experiment is the ideal continuation of GINT project (http://gint.na.infn.it) from which inherits basic information and methodologies. GINT demonstrated photoresponsivity properties of CNTs measuring their spectral response. SinPhoNIA starts from these measurements to build a pixelled detector made of MWCNT layers on silicon silicon substrate with single photon detection capability.

The scientific collaboration groups scientists of various kind of experience: L’Aquila, Roma “Tor Vergata” and Terni groups will provide CNT production by CVD techniques or chemical deposition; Bari will investigate the possibility to use this new kind of detector for new kind of RICH (Ring Imaging Cherenkov); Naples group will apply for development of detector for space experiments (Super-EUSO) and will investigate the optoelectronic properties of materials, Perugia group will provide structured silicon substrates for signal amplification and detection.
